To create a highly productive container vegetable garden, there's nothing better than pots made of geotextile fabric like Smart Pots. These pots allow the roots to breathe well, enabling them to develop to their maximum potential and provide you with an abundance of vegetables and lush herbs.
Mathis's Vegetable Garden
Mathis Bouchard-Rouleau from Serres Dame Nature, a Passion Jardins merchant from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, explains in this video how to create a productive vegetable garden in a Smart Pot.
First, choose the herbs that are most useful for him in the kitchen: basil, cilantro, Italian parsley... make your choice among your favorites.
Next come the tomatoes. You can plant two determinate growth varieties, which will be more bushy and compact: ideal for pots. Mathis recommends the Celebrity, a large red tomato, and the Sungold with its small orange fruits. Place them at each end of the Smart Pot, planting them up to the collar. Following his advice, plant the tomatoes a little horizontally to increase rooting.
Under the tomato plants, Mathis suggests planting a tender mix of mesclun, as lettuces appreciate cool temperatures and shade. You could also opt for romaine, Boston, or green or red curly lettuce. Finish with the cucumbers. Mathis chooses Lebanese cucumbers and advises adding a wooden trellis to keep control of your precious vegetables. To make your work easier, plant the cucumbers at the back of the pot.
A Quality Soil for Healthy Plants
The quality of the soil in which the plants grow has a direct influence on their quality and, in this case, on the abundance of your harvests. Start by lining your pot with a base of Passion Jardins Marine Compost, then fill it with potting soil from our house brand. Once the planting is done, sprinkle Passion Jardins vegetable garden and fruit fertilizer at the base of the plants and water abundantly.
Pro Tips
- To have an abundance of vegetables all summer, every two to three weeks, reapply vegetable garden and fruit fertilizer at the base of your plants.
- If you're going to be away, water your container garden generously and place it in the shade.
